Tresco Stores Assistant Manager

A wonderful opportunity to join our Tresco Stores team as Assistant Manager, you will help manage the small team and ensure this important island shop is efficient, consistent and successful in achieving its operational objectives.

Reporting to: Head of Retail & Restaurant

Salary: Competitive

Hours: Full Time

Contract: Seasonal with potential of progressing to permanent

Duties Include

  • Working closely with Stores Manager on operational strategy in line with seasonal changes, including stock levels and team planning
  • Acting as duty manager as required (day off / holiday / sickness cover) – full responsibility for the department including staff management and dealing with emergencies
  • Managing, overseeing and motivating a dynamic team of both seasonal and permanent staff members, with responsibility for training as required.
  • Responsibility for stock ordering as required, maintaining stock levels in line with seasonal, commercial objectives
  • Managing stock across shop floor in line with departmental standards, including overseeing incoming deliveries
  • Liaising with suppliers and problem solving in the event of disruption to stock supply
  • Post Office cover as required – accurately processing transactions in line with central Post Office rules and regulations. (Full training will be provided)
  • Handling customer complaints and queries confidently, maintaining the reputation of the business and finding solutions that ensure positive outcomes for all parties
  • Responsibility for opening and closing procedures, including cashing up tills and compiling daily banking
  • Light food handling duties – serving on the deli counter, cutting cheese, baking breads and pastries, abiding by food hygiene guidelines and maintaining a high standard of cleanliness
  • Accurately handling cash and processing customer transactions, sometimes at speed / under pressure

  • Confident making accurate decisions at pace, under pressure, and, at times, independently.
  • Excellent time management skills including the ability to work to deadlines, multitask and prioritise.
  • Flexible and adaptable – willing to ‘plug gaps’ in the wider team as business needs require.
  • Strong attention to detail and a good memory, to help observe rates of sale and buying trends.
  • Able to maintain calm professionalism while under pressure, and resilience in the face of setbacks
  • Fantastic interpersonal skills – confident giving and taking direction, able to communicate sensitively, empathetically and openly with a wide range of personalities. Generous and able to foster a good team culture
  • Confidential and trustworthy
  • Comfortable with performing physical tasks daily, such as lifting heavy boxes, stocking floor-level shelves
  • Some leadership experience, whether professionally, academically or extra-curricular, would be useful
  • Driving licence holder

Qualifications and Training

  • Full training for the role will be provided – this will include Post Office training in line with wider Post Office regulations. The individual will also be required to hold / obtain a food hygiene certificate.

Accountability

The Assistant Manager is accountable for ensuring a consistent stock supply to meet customer demand, in line with seasonal buying patterns and specified stock levels. They are required to act as duty manager for the Stores where required (day-off / holiday / sickness cover) at which points they will hold full accountability for the operational objectives of the department.
