Our Favourite Tresco Winter Walks

With deserted beaches, wild and windswept heathland, meandering lanes and wondrous woodland to explore, what better than a winter walk on Tresco?

Tresco’s wild and beautiful landscape is paradise in winter. You could easily walk the island without seeing a soul, with plenty of beaches and coastal paths to explore.

Of course, as your reward, there's always a toasty fire and something to warm the cockles at The New Inn - or perhaps a soak in the spa.

Here are three of our favourite island walks:

North End Adventures

Start at New Grimsby quay and follow the path behind the waiting room building – you’ll see a sign directing you towards the castles.

From here, follow the coastal path between ferns and bracken. Soon you’ll come across a steep clamber up to a rocky outcrop – catch your first view of Cromwell’s Castle further along the coast, and take a break while your pooch explores the headland.

Continue along the coast, and soon you’ll see Cromwell’s towering above you. Scramble down to the tiny cove below and have a paddle, or climb the stone steps into the castle and marvel at the view. Further spiralling steps lead to the upper level and its fantastic panoramic views.

Once you’ve taken in your first castle, brave the steep slope up to the ruins of King Charles’ Castle. Looking down the Tresco channel all the way to St. Agnes island is quite something.

Head back towards New Grimsby – a rocky path runs through the heather across the middle of the headland. Conveniently, you'll come out just up the road from The New Inn, which is open throughout the day.

Keeping it Coastal

Great for walking off a hearty lunch at The New Inn, head to Blockhouse Castle, passing St. Nicholas Church and the school. Blockhouse boasts captivating views across to St. Martin’s and the Eastern Isles – take a moment to enjoy the sights.

Head down onto the coast and follow the winding paths across the banks, meandering through the clusters of bracken. With stunning beaches running parallel, you can clamber up and down as you wish, collecting shells and beach treasures.

At the end of the island, you’ll find Pentle Bay – one of our most popular beaches and a great spot to sit awhile and watch the world go by. Head back to The New Inn via your choice of route – Pool Road, the Abbey Drive and Cliff Fields are all picturesque strolls.

To the Garden and Back

Best explored in wellies or walking boots, follow Pool Road as it skirts along the edge of the Great Pool. Stop off at the bird hides en route or simply amble through the peaceful, tree-lined space.

As the bumpy track joins a concrete road, swing right and follow the pool's edge. Pass Tresco Abbey and wind your way to the Abbey Garden entrance.

Here you’ll discover beds and beds of exotic plants – walk the tumbling terraces and marvel at the collection of figureheads and relics in Valhalla Museum. Keep your eyes peeled for red squirrels and golden pheasants.

Once you’ve had your garden fill, Appletree beach nearby is an ideal spot for a shoreline stroll. You can then traverse the coastal road along Cliff Fields and back to warm your toes by the fire in the Sleepers' Lounge at The New Inn - or perhaps head to the spa for a few soothing lengths of the pool.
