Capturing the island
James Darling is a photographer based in Cornwall who has been photographing life on Tresco for the past year. Many of his photographs can be seen on the website and The Tresco Times. Here, he shares some of his thoughts about working on Tresco.
As a photographer, Tresco Island is a dream client: huge empty skies, pale white sands, glass-green seas and the light, the light...
In the long days of summer you can pretend you’re in the Caribbean… sailing to the next rocky point, laying down your footprints on virgin sands, enjoying freshly caught seafood on the beach. In the Abbey Gardens, the colours and smells of lands far away confuse your senses…you are, after all, only 28 miles off the coast of Cornwall.
As the nights draw in, the mood changes dramatically. As the Atlantic storms blow in you see a completely new perspective of the landscape - browns, blacks and heather. Out of season, life is busier than ever for the islanders; fields must be farmed, building work undertaken and children go back to the busy, vibrant island school.
I hope you enjoy my photographs and they entice you to return/discover Tresco, it's a magical place…
James specialises in weddings, family portraiture and lifestyle photography.
