Day Trips to Tresco

Whether you're coming from elsewhere on Scilly, or further afield in Devon or Cornwall, a day trip to Tresco is the perfect day out

Reaching new heights

Ever wondered who looks after our most rugged and remote landmarks? We've got the answer...

When you are on Tresco, the ever fixed mark on the horizon is Bishop Rock Lighthouse. In the day, it sparkles in the distance and as the sun begins to set, it is lit up and silhouetted amongst orange sky. The lighthouse (as it is today) was built in 1858 and is officially the world's smallest island with a building on it!

Designing and building it was a huge feat that has been recounted by many Scillonians over time but maintaining it is a feat that is still being faced today. Two such people who know that more than most are Lanyon and Morley - abseilers who recently scaled the epic building in order to carry out all important work. Lanyon used to work as Abbey Chef on Tresco Island and his Mum Lucy Aldridge returns to the island each year to teach yoga on retreats. Now a Steeplejack, it is lovely that Lanyon has maintained his relationship with the islands - he even attached the radio antenna on top of the Penzance Heliport roof!

Morley documented their time on the lighthouse and you can find it linked below - it certainly makes for an amazing watch!
