Giving Back: A Patchwork of Paintings
Gallery Tresco plays host to a fantastic event in aid of The Island Haven
Islander and art enthusiast Duffy wanted to do something creative for local charity The Island Haven and 'A Patchwork of Paintings' was born.
The premise? Tresco locals, school children, islanders from across Scilly, and professional artists with links to the islands all get given a blank 20cm x 20cm canvas. From there, they paint whatever comes to mind when Scilly is mentioned. Whether that's white beaches, boats and buoys, blue seas or puffins, the sky is the limit.
The event was held this week and it was a complete success. The wall was carpeted in a wide array of canvases and it was testament to the beauty of Scilly and the talent of its locals - as well as adoring fans from further afield!
Tom Rickman, Maggie O'Brien, Gary Long, Iona Sanders, Nick Botting, Marie Mills, Gary Long, Imogen Bone, Richard Pearce, Lizzie Black and Stuart Kettle were just some of the artists taking part so there was fantastic art to be won and there was quite the atmosphere whilst people waited to hear their name called! Just £75 a ticket and every ticket holder won a piece of art!
The meaning behind this event is poignant as every penny went to a vital charity. Duffy was inspired by The Island Haven and its important presence in the life of Scillonian residents as, when islanders undergo medical care, emergency treatment or pregnancy, there is currently nowhere for us to stay. The only option is to pay for accommodation, and should you be discharged in the middle of the night, there isn't anywhere to go and rest your head. A problem for local people but also visitors who may well get flown to the mainland for help.
The Island Haven will provide, equip and operate a place for the people and visitors of Scilly to stay when undergoing medical care, providing dedicated, affordable accommodation when it really matters: a place to stay in times of need.
A property has been purchased but the challenge isn't over. All proceeds from A Patchwork of Paintings have gone to The Island Haven and we are delighted to announce that £7261 was raised. If you were unable to attend or are happy with the prize you won and feel it is worth more, please donate if you can via the link below.
