An apprentice no more
Keeping the island afloat is our small team of tradespeople and engineers. One member of that team is Dan Perry - now officially an engineer after 4 years as an apprentice
Many years ago, Dan Perry was Tresco's first official recruit from the annual Career's Day that takes place at Five Islands Academy on St Mary's. The St Mary's local was determined to become a Tresco employee and traverse the seas everyday to learn all there is to know about life as an engineer. Aged just 16, Dan began his sojourn as an apprentice on Tresco and four years later, he is now an official, fully-fledged engineer.
Earlier this month, it was confirmed that Dan had passed his Level 2 Service Engineer Qualification with distinction and his Level 3 Service Technician Qualification with merit. There is nothing we can't throw at him now!
When asked about his job, Dan humbly states that he enjoys the challenges thrown at him and mentor and supervisor Richard Combellack chimes in saying 'you never know what is going to break!'
Dan goes on to say that unlike other engineering roles that may be restricted to just agricultural machinery for example, he and Rich have to service the wide array of engines and motors that can be found on Tresco. From buggies to tractors to electric buses, if something is broken, Dan knows about it!
Moreover, the Tresco fleet is constantly changing and growing, and with each new vehicle or contraption comes a chance to learn something new.
