The Tresco Art Collection

Tresco boasts a wealth of artworks outside the gallery setting, such as the sculptures in Smith Square and on the lawn in front of the Flying Boat Café & Deli.

A permanent exhibition of metal sculpture by Tom Leaper sits within The Tresco Abbey Garden. Some sculptures are located in prime positions, such as the Leaping Fish on the small Pool and the Agave Fountain below the Shell House, while others are secreted away within the old Abbey Ruins.

The contemporary shapes fit comfortably within the garden's natural setting, creating an ideal opportunity for the viewer to stop and engage with the work.

Another art feature within the Abbey Garden is the Shell House, lovingly decorated in a shell and garden theme mosaic by Lucy Dorrien-Smith. Her talents can also be seen at Tresco School, where she inspired and actively encouraged the children to decorate the exterior wall and entranceway.

Ceramic artist Adrian Brough was enlisted to design and lay the tile flooring of the Shell House and was commissioned to tile the backdrop of the pizza oven in the Ruin Beach Café.

If you are planning to visit the islands, you may want to view the Tresco Art Collection, including works by Alfred Wallis and Harold Harvey, at The Flying Boat Cafe & Deli. On Bryher, you can see paintings by Patrick Heron, Dame Laura Knight and Julian Trevelyan at Hell Bay Hotel.

It is a rare opportunity to find such a noteworthy collection made so accessible to the public. The Collection continues throughout Tresco, where original works from artists such as Fred Yates, Rose Hilton, John Miller, Mary Fedden, Kurt Jackson, Patrick Heron and Anthony Frost can be seen in the cottages – a unique feature in a holiday home.
